International Student Fee Protection

Choosing to study overseas is a significant investment for students and their families. It is therefore important to know that tuition fees and other payments are properly protected.
New Zealand is among the countries with the strongest student fee protection frameworks in international education. Through regulations overseen by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA), education providers are required to have appropriate arrangements in place to protect students’ prepaid fees, including in the event that a provider is unable to continue operating.
This provides international students and their families with an additional level of financial security and confidence when choosing New Zealand as their study destination.
How NZLC Protects Student Fees
As an NZQA-approved education provider, NZLC complies with the applicable requirements for international student fee protection.
Student tuition fees and accommodation payments received by NZLC are managed under an independent trust arrangement, with Walker Wayland Auckland Ltd acting as the appointed trustee. For this reason, Walker Wayland Auckland Ltd, rather than NZLC, appears as the bank transfer recipient when students make payments. Accommodation payments are also managed in accordance with the applicable protection arrangements.
The trust arrangement provides three key protections:
- Independent fund management: Student funds are held and managed separately from NZLC’s general operating funds.
- Fees released in line with course delivery: Tuition fees are progressively released to NZLC by the trustee in accordance with the applicable trust arrangements and course delivery schedule.
- Protection in the event of provider closure: If NZLC is unable to continue delivering a course, eligible unused tuition fees may be refunded to students or transferred to another education provider, subject to the applicable trust arrangements and conditions.
