Every year in the month of December, the residents of Franklin Road in Auckland cover their houses in beautiful neon lights, inflatable Santas, colourful snowmen and cute reindeer! Nearly every house on the street participates and walking down Franklin Road to admire the beautiful lights has become a tradition for all Aucklanders at Christmas time. Along the footpath people sing Christmas carols and sell food, drink and Christmas toys in the days before Christmas.
To see the most beautiful Christmas lights in Auckland city and experience an electric atmosphere, make sure you head to Franklin Road this month!
When? Every night after dark during December, (weather permitting). The best time to go is one or two weeks before Christmas.
Where? Franklin Road, Freemans Bay (only 20 minutes on foot from NZLC)
How can we get there? You can easily walk to Franklin Road from NZLC. See the map.
The best bus to catch is the GREEN link from 17 Customs Street East, (Stop 7016, just in front of the London Lolly Shop), and get off at 215 Ponsonby Road, Stop 7219. From here it will take you 2-3 minutes to walk to Franklin Road.
Price? Free! But take some money in case you want to buy a hot chocolate or coffee from Ponsonby Road before / or after your walk. You could also get dinner on Ponsonby Road first as there are lots of delicious restaurants and cafes.
What to take? Your camera and some comfortable walking shoes, (it takes about 10-15 minutes to walk along one side of the road)
