ESL Job Profiles

A certificate in CELTA can be like a passport to exploring the world! English teachers are in demand in many different countries.

NZLC’s English Teacher Training Department has many contacts with ESL schools around the world seeking graduates. During your CELTA course at NZLC, you will receive help and guidance with applications, CVs and job placements.

The profiles below will give you an idea of what a typical ESL teaching job might offer you in each country.

NEW ZEALAND

Many CELTA trainees like to gain experience in NZ before they go overseas or start a permanent teaching career in NZ. The majority of language schools are in Auckland, but there are also language schools throughout NZ. The busiest periods are from February to May and June to August and December to January. Hourly rates range from NZ$25 to NZ$40 per hour, depending on where you teach and the experience you have. Many institutions also offer private tuition to their students.

Average salary: $25 - $40 per hour

Contract length: Short-term or permanent positions available

Type of institute: Private Language Schools

Accommodation: Not provided

Holidays: 4 weeks paid holiday and public holidays.

JAPAN

A long-time favourite for ESL teaching, Japan offers one of the higher salaries as well as all the extra perks like housing. The infrastructure is amazing, the country is safe and the people are helpful and polite. You can apply to do the JET programme or find a job independently at high schools or private language centres. There are many night schools which is great for those who want their mornings free.

Average salary: $2,800 - $3,200 per month

Contract length: Minimum 1 year (usually starting Jul/Aug/Apr)

Type of institute: Schools and private language centres

Accommodation: Free housing often provided

Holidays: 2-4 weeks paid holidays + public holidays

Flights: Flight reimbursement is sometimes offered

SOUTH KOREA

South Korea has long been a favourite for ESL teachers. The typical ESL job offers the complete package: apartment, insurance and a contract completion bonus. Positions are available throughout the country in small towns and larger cities. Private lessons are a way to further top up your salary.

Average salary: $2,800 - $3,200 per month

Contract length: minimum 1 year

Type of institute: Schools and private language centres

Accommodation: Free housing often provided

Holidays: 2-4 weeks paid holidays + public holidays

Flights: Flight reimbursement is sometimes offered

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES – Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Dubai is one of the fasted growing cities in the world and offers safety, modern infrastructure, outstanding shopping and leisure facilities, lots of sunshine and the highest paying salaries for ESL teachers. Most ESL positions are in language centres and teachers are paid according to experience.

Average salary: $2,400 - $4,000 per month - tax free

Contract length: Minimum 1 year

Type of institute: Mostly private language centres

Accommodation: Free housing provided

Holidays: 2-4 weeks paid holidays + public holidays

Flights: Flight reimbursement

THAILAND

You’ll love the warm and playful nature of the Thai people as well as the beautiful landscape with stunning beaches to take advantage of when you are not in the classroom.

Average salary: $1,000 - $1,200 per month

Contract length: 6 – 12 months (usually starting in March)

Accommodation: Assistance offered

Holidays: 2 week paid holidays + public holidays

Flights: not included

VIETNAM

The need for ESL teaching in Vietnam is increasing as the country begins to open up its doors. Schools and universities tend to have better pay and working conditions. If you can teach IELTS or TOEFL, you will be in high demand. Food and transport is cheap and you’ll be able to enjoy world heritage sites, beautiful beaches and mountains during your spare time.

Average salary: $1,000 - $2,000 per month

Contract length: 6 – 12 months (usually starting in March)

Accommodation: Assistance offered

Holidays: 2 week paid holidays + public holidays

Flights: not included

RUSSIA

This diverse country is opening up more and more to the ESL market. Language schools are popular in Russia due to a shortage of English teachers in state schools. Many schools will provide visa sponsorships and may offer Russian lessons.

Average salary: $1,000 - $1,200 per month

Contract length: 6 - 12 months (usually starting in March/Sept)

Accommodation: Free accommodation or housing allowance

Holidays: 2 week paid holidays + public holidays

Flights: Flight allowance or partial reimbursement

CHINA

There are abundant opportunities for you to teach English to all ages in numerous programmes. Positions in private language centres or public schools are available in both cities and small villages. Most positions are located in Beijing and Shanghai. Visa assistance is usually offered. NZLC have a recruitment partner who offer help with finding work, visas and flights.

Average salary: $1,000 - $1,800 per month

Contract length: 6 - 12 months (usually starting in March/Sept)

Type of institute: Public schools and private centres. All ages

Accommodation: Free accommodation or housing allowance

Holidays: 2 week paid holidays + public holidays

Flights: Flight contribution + insurance
